Akrata (149 Km/92.6 miles from Athens and 60 km/37.3 miles from Patra) and the beautiful
beaches of the surrounding villages Trapeza, Diakofto, Platanos and Aigeira, attracts many
holidaymakers who enjoy the unique places of interest in the area.
Northeast of Akrata, are the ruins of ancient Aigeira with its famous ancient theatre and traces of
the ancient city of Aiges, which was destroyed around 281 B.C.
The mountain areas north of Akrata present a special attraction for the holidaymaker. Here the
visitor can see the beautiful lake Tsivlou and explore the historic and traditional villages of
Kloukinochoria-Agridi, Messorougi, Peristera, Solos, Zarouchla and many more. All these villages
are scattered inside the thick pine forest. Beside Mount Helmos is the famous fountain of “Golfos”
from the play “Golfo-Girl of the Mountain”. (Writer: Spyridon Peresiadis (1864 – 1918). From the
village of Solos you could reach the mythical “immortal waters”, the water of Stygos in which
-according to mythology- the Olympian Gods had to take their Oath. From Styga the visitor
continues to Mega Spilaio (Big Cave) through the magnificent and sheer mountain sides of Helmos.
Approximately 30 km/18.6 miles from Akrata is Kalavrita, a traditional town with wonderful natural
beauty. Here is the final stop for the funicular railway from Diakofto. In Kalavrita’s ski resort
winter sports fans will find one of the best ski slopes in Greece, while 17 Km/10.6 miles from the
city is located the “Spilaio ton Limnon” (“The Cave of the Lakes”), a rare creation of nature where
the lakes in the cave are on 3 different levels!
